The game supports the addition of new songs that can be purchased through the PlayStation Store. Additional tracks will be a time-limited exclusive to Unplugged before they are released as downloadable content for the console games.
Game modes are similar to Rock Band's, and the soundtrack includes a number of songs that have already been a part of the Rock Band series. The core game is functionally similar to the note-matching gameplay of Harmonix's previous titles, Frequency and Amplitude, with the player responsible for playing all four instruments- lead and bass guitar, drums, and vocals-using the Portable's controls. The game was released in North America and Europe on June 9, 2009. The game is developed by Backbone Entertainment in conjunction with Harmonix, published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts. PSP system owners will also have the option of purchasing tracks via PlayStation®Store on the PC. PlayStation®Network will power the in-game store, and players can use their existing PlayStation Network accounts to purchase tracks, similar to the Rock Band console experience. Harmonix will stock the music store with 10 tracks at launch, and additional music will be released on a regular basis. Rock Band Unplugged helps players keep on rocking by delivering the first PSP game to feature an in-game store for downloadable content. Based on the award-winning Rock Band series of games, Rock Band Unplugged features 41 songs on-disc that encompass popular tracks from the Rock Band music library, as well as nine songs exclusive to Rock Band Unplugged for a limited time before becoming available as downloadable content on other console versions.
